GENERAL INFORMATION Los Barriles is a seaside area that still retains much of the kick-back pace that made Baja California Sur popular. Fabulous sandy beaches, clean beautiful seas filled with fish, crystal clear air, and a remote feeling that seems far removed from civilization. The road south from Los Barriles also skirts miles of postcard-perfect beaches, with a couple of small, well maintained hotels ready to serve the needs of Baja California Sur travelers. Los Barriles is still famous for fishing, although surfing and kayaking are increasingly popular. The hotels do a great job of taking care of visitors, and beautiful custom homes continue to be built on the low bluffs overlooking the Sea of Cortes or, as known in the maps, Gulf of California. Even with the new homes being built, there is still plenty of wide open beach front property for all to enjoy. Our part of the East Cape includes, starting South, Rancho Leonero, La Capilla, Spa Buena Vista, Buena Vista, Los Barriles, Punta Pescadero, Las Tinas and El Cardonal. Everything north of Los Barriles is still really rural with dirt roads, no telephone service, hardly any tourism and lots of ranch land. THE WEATHER: In the winter and spring time (January till April) temperatures may go as low as 60 degrees Fahrenheit but usually stay at around 75-80 and it does get windy...that's why the kite-and wind surfers like so much. The summer month June-September can be really hot...in July and August the thermometer hits around 110 Fahrenheit and the humidity is relatively high. August and September are also our hurricane season with a high probability of at least one big storm hitting us. The most beautiful month in Baja are definatley October - December, this is when the ocean water is still nice and warm and the outside temperatures are around the 90s. DRIVING DIRECTIONS
Los Barriles is around 70 kilometers away (about 44 miles) from the Los Cabos International Airport (in Mexico roadsigns are in kilometers, as are the odometers and trip-meters on rental cars. For that reason, distances are given in kilometers). The drive, which takes about an hour and a half, is 70 kilometers of paved road. From the airport or your rental car location, follow the signs towards La Paz. This puts you on Highway 1, the main highway in Baja. Stay on the highway for 68 kilometers (just always go straight, no turns….you will pass by the village Miraflores where there is a Gas Station , about 15 km later you pass by the village Santiago, keep going straight). After about 65 km the highway hits the water and you will see a sign for a town called Los Barriles. At the entrance of the town you see a fountain with little barrels, turn right here, off the highway…you have arrived in Los Barriles. During your drive, especially at night, watch out for cows and goats that wander around freely (Mexico is a free range country!). |
